Resilience in Color
Hello! I'm Brittany Was, a contemporary impasto artist based in Oregon, whose work explores the healing power of the wild.
Rooted in a personal journey of overcoming illness, my paintings are a dialogue between the raw beauty of the outdoors and the resilience of the human spirit.
The Shift
For over 20 years, painting was the quiet backdrop to my life as a nurse - a passionate hobby I squeezed into the margins of a high-pressure career. But when I was diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), a rare immunological disease, the script flipped. The diagnosis forced me to leave nursing, transforming my lifelong passion of painting into my full-time purpose.
While my physical world became smaller, my creative vision expanded. I stopped painting just to escape and started painting to connect - capturing the spectral vibration of light and the chaotic texture of the wild with a focus I never had time for before. This is no longer just a pastime; it is my voice.
Healing Beyond the Canvas
I believe that the same energy that shapes every mountain and wildflower also shapes each of us. To honor this journey, a portion of every Gallery sale is donated to NORD (National Organization for Rare Disorders). When you collect my work, you are helping others find their own path to healing.
